Number Memory Test
Memorise the number, then type it back. One digit longer each round.
Memorise the number, then type it back. One extra digit each round.
What this measures
A number appears for a few seconds, disappears, and you type it back. Each round adds a digit. Your score is the longest number you reproduced exactly.
This is digit span, one of the oldest measurements in psychology — it has been part of intelligence testing since the early 1900s and still appears in the Wechsler scales today. The classic finding is that the average adult holds about seven digits, which is where seven-digit phone numbers came from.
Almost everyone can beat their raw span with one trick: read the digits aloud in groups. "4 8 2 9 1 7" is six items, but "four eighty-two, ninety-one seven" is three. That is the same chunking that lets people memorise long strings of numbers for competition.
Scores here correlate with working memory more than with intelligence generally, despite what a lot of sites imply. It is a real measurement of a real thing, and it is not an IQ test.
What is a good number memory score
| Band | Score | Percentile |
|---|---|---|
| Top 1% | ≥ 16 digits | 99th |
| Top 5% | ≥ 13 digits | 95th |
| Top 15% | ≥ 11 digits | 85th |
| Top 30% | ≥ 10 digits | 70th |
| Median | ≥ 9 digits | 50th |
| Bottom 25% | ≥ 7 digits | 25th |
| Bottom 10% | ≥ 6 digits | 10th |
Bands follow the classic digit-span literature, where the average adult holds around seven digits and 9 to 10 is a strong result.

Questions
What is a good number memory score?
Nine digits is around average for adults on this format. Eleven puts you in the top 30%, thirteen in the top 15%, and sixteen or more in the top 5%.
Why are phone numbers seven digits?
Because that is roughly what an average person can hold in short-term memory. Miller’s 1956 paper on the "magical number seven" is the classic reference, and telephone numbering was designed around the same limit.
How do I remember more digits?
Group them. Reading "482917" as "four eighty-two, ninety-one seven" turns six items into three, which fits comfortably inside normal working memory. Competitive memorisers extend the same trick with practised codes for each pair.
Is digit span the same as IQ?
No. Digit span is one subtest within some IQ batteries and measures working memory specifically. It correlates with general intelligence but is not a substitute for it.
