What this measures
The spacebar counter measures how many times you can press the space bar in a fixed window. It started as a way to settle arguments about keyboard speed and turned into its own small sport, with public leaderboards and a steady supply of TikTok challenges.
Key repeat is suppressed, so holding the bar down registers exactly one press. That is the difference between a real counter and a broken one: without it, a held key would fire dozens of times a second and every score would be meaningless.
Two-handed thumb alternation is the technique that wins here, the same way butterfly clicking wins on a mouse. One thumb tops out around 7 presses per second; alternating both regularly clears 10.
Your keyboard matters more than it does on a mouse test. Membrane boards debounce for several milliseconds and can genuinely drop presses at speed, while mechanical boards with 1000 Hz polling register everything you give them.
What is a good spacebar counter score
| Band | Score | Percentile |
|---|---|---|
| Top 1% | ≥ 12 | 99th |
| Top 5% | ≥ 10 | 95th |
| Top 15% | ≥ 8.5 | 85th |
| Top 30% | ≥ 7.4 | 70th |
| Median | ≥ 6.3 | 50th |
| Bottom 25% | ≥ 5 | 25th |
| Bottom 10% | ≥ 3.8 | 10th |

Questions
What is a good spacebar score?
Around 6.3 presses per second is average. Above 8.5 puts you in the top 15% and above 10 in the top 5%, which usually requires alternating both thumbs.
Does holding the space bar count?
No. Key repeat is ignored, so a held bar counts as a single press. Anything else would make the score meaningless.
How do I hit the space bar faster?
Alternate both thumbs rather than hammering with one, keep the presses shallow so the switch actuates without bottoming out, and rest your palms so only the thumbs move.
Does my keyboard affect the score?
Yes. Membrane keyboards debounce for several milliseconds and can drop presses at high speed, while mechanical boards with fast polling register everything. A difference of one or two presses per second between boards is normal.
